Surely Radiohead?

To my mind, 'shred' isn't just confined to rock, metal, jazz and jazz fusion but I'd include players from country, bluegrass and the acoustic finger picking and flat picking worlds. There are many brilliant players but tops for me...Danny Gatton, Scotty Anderson, Brent Mason, Albert Lee, David Grier and Pete Huttlinger.

I consider myself a Coltrane follower but I am not afraid to say his free jazz era was crap. I will not force myself to be a fan of the artist but instead pf the music. On another note Coltreane's Sound is underrated and so is his collaboration with Milt Jackson, Bags and Trane.

I love your channel Andy and I think you make some valid points although it does tend to veer into the 'it was all much better in my day' territory which, while it may be true, doesn't get us very far. Rock/pop music has always been a commodity first and an art form second, whether it's huckster managers and promotors cashing in on early rock n roll in the 50's, rip-off managers and record companies in the 60's and 70's, it's all just another manifestation of capitalism. The question is, how do we, as consumers, support the artists that create the music that brings us the same joy that you and I got from putting on an LP and playing each side over and over when we were teenagers. The digital download platform can offer opportunities for artists to have greater control over what they do but I know it's frustrating when there appears to be such hegemony from the likes of Swift, Sheeran, Coldplay, Beyonce.. name your act.

As with so many things in life, I’m with Homer on this one. I remember the day he summed it all up - To jazz! The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems. Or was it - Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

We are living in a totalitarian society. The dictators are the owners of the social media not the politicians. Logarithms take our freedom. The art of making music is being conquered by computers. The fastest and best computers will steer, control and replace our thinking and creativity. These computers are owned by priviliged few. We are trapped and played like puppets.

The irony of this is that Glastonbury Festival has a fence around it which is about 16 feet high and 8 miles long. It's proved to be highly effective at keeping out the unwanted. Perhaps they should relocate it to Dover. Banksy is an ar$e and Idles are $hit.

I took up guitar in 1980 so lived right through the evolvement of rock guitar in the 80s and it was hard not to get swept up in the whole speed and technique thing. Things did get a 'bit silly' (cue Monty Python sketch) by the end of the decade and my fingers weren't playing ball so I moved onto other musical pastures. Although there were some great players from that era I still love like Ronnie Le Tekro, Vitto Bratta and Greg Howe, these days I prefer the guys who inspired 'shred' (I hate that term!) such as Uli, Gary, EVH, Schenker, Sykes, Marino etc. Its nice to look back on that exciting pioneering time though.

Don Powell was a real heavy hitter like Bonham, Moon, Mick Tucker, Bev Bevan and Ian Paice. The American's never had true belters like them.

It seems that almost anything can be considered art these days. I'm sure if I climbed onto a plinth in a big city and stood motionless in a pile of horse manure for twelve hours a day for the next six months, somebody would consider it art and spend time interpreting what it meant. It might be necessary to explain to people that it was art, rather than a protest or a prank, although not explaining it would probably lead to lengthy discussions about its nature, which would be interesting. Personally, I consider the Banksy dinghy meaningless. It's just some bloke, or group of people, seeking attention by attempting to be outrageous. Any art you see in it is created by your interpretation of it. Yes, it required some organisational skill to do it, but making a car requires a vast amount more. Why is a Honda Civic not a work of art? Or is it?

Thanks again Andy. Always love your take on music history and dig your tangents. I think one of the biggest problems with jazz appreciation is the overly reverential language that it's disciples attach to major figures like Coltrane and Parker. Cutting out terminology such as "genius" and "greatest of all time" might be a good place to start, because they are completely meaningless. They also sound dogmatic and as a result end up alienating people who might otherwise get into appreciating the actual music.

The best gig I ever saw was Holdsworth in Brisbane Aus around 94 with Wackerman on drums. Sublime gig. Only 150 people or so. Alan sat at the bar and was so down to earth and friendly. Amazing human and musician. My only issue with his recordings is that they were so wet and compartmentalised sounding but live the band was so warm. I only wish they were mixed true to the live sound of the band. Hard, I know, but...

Watching Glastonbury and seeing the whole dingy floating over the crowd during The Idols, made me think of so many of my friends that did not make the travel from Cuba to Florida and would have loved to visit Glastonbury at some point that I just broke down and cried like a baby, as far as I am concerned, thumbs up, and I'm no fan of him... Anything that creates discussion is fine by me

Love the tribute to your brother in law. If you're into John McLaughlin I'd recommend Steve Morse. Another fantastic guitarist who can play anything is Guthrie Govan.

First real progressive rock record albums were Procol Harum Shine on Brightly and Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland in 1968, and some pieces by Frank Zappa, Keith Emerson with Nice, Pink Floyd, Cream and The Moody Blues, in my not so humble opinion and the same as Andy's. Credit must be given the recording engineers who completed the work.

B7-E7-A7-D7-G7-C7-F7-Bb7-Eb7-Ab7-Db7-Gb7-Cb7 Repeat and add upper extensions. I think many people dislike an inordinate amount of harmonic tension in their music. The music needs to resolve or it all becomes a big question mark. Going around the circle with dominant chords frays nerves.
